My go-to resource for practical advice is often Jack Canfield’s THE SUCCESS PRINCIPLES book. (In my top 20 success books list)
His chapter on Principle 17 “The Power of ASKING” is so incredibly valuable. I upped my game a few years ago in the principle of asking after reading the chapter AND listening to his YouTube audio about his book, The Aladdin Factor, which he co-wrote with Mark Victor Hansen regarding this topic.
He states this is the most powerful of Success Principles yet it’s still a challenge that holds most people back. Do you need to sharpen your asking habit? I did. What a lift of energy when it changed everything including my confidence!
He teaches making a new normal of asking for anything. An upgrade at a hotel. A date with someone you’ve been attracted to. Ask for the sale. Help around the house. A pay raise at a job. Ask for more love. More hugs. You name it. We can tend to hold back for fear of looking needy or worse the “rejection.”
In business, these tips are worth their weight in gold.
Jack’s 4 Tips to Asking:
- Ask as if you expect to get it.
- Assume you can.
- Ask someone who can give it to you (qualified decision-maker)
- Be clear & specific.
Asking for the sale in business is usually the most common challenge. He has startling business statistics about selling. A survey done by Notre Dame University:
44% of all salespeople quit trying to sell to a prospect after the first call.
24% quit after the second call
14% quit after the third call
12% quit after the fourth call
This means 94% quit by the fourth call. BUT 60% of sales happen after the 4th call! This means 94% of all salespeople don’t give themselves a chance at 60% of the prospective buyers!
Where do you fall in these stats? Time to up your asking game? It feels so fantastic to raise your standards in this game. Try it!
